Our Outdoor Progression Document outlines a clear and structured approach to supporting children’s development through outdoor learning from ages 2 to 5. It provides a carefully sequenced framework that enables children to build skills over time while engaging in meaningful, play-based experiences.
The document supports practitioners to plan outdoor provision that promotes physical development, communication, and independence. It ensures that children are given opportunities to revisit, practise, and extend key skills as they grow, with progression mapped across age ranges.
Children are encouraged to explore a wide range of outdoor experiences, including climbing, balancing, running, problem-solving, and imaginative play. These opportunities support the development of coordination, strength, spatial awareness, and confidence, while also promoting social interaction and language development.
The progression document is designed to be flexible and inclusive, allowing activities to be adapted to meet the needs of all children, including those with EAL and additional needs. It supports practitioners in providing appropriate challenge while ensuring all children can access and enjoy outdoor learning.
By using this document, practitioners can ensure that outdoor provision is purposeful, consistent, and developmentally appropriate, supporting children to become confident, capable learners who are ready for their next stage of learning.
